The game is set in a fantasy world at the technological level of the Second Industrial Revolution, and centers around a group of rebels seeking to overthrow an imperial dictatorship. Final Fantasy VI is particularly notable for its extensive roster of 14 playable characters, the most in any main series game. The game features a steampunk aesthetic, a departure from the medieval settings of earlier Final Fantasy games, and boasts a score composed by the renowned Nobuo Uematsu. The game's geography and landscape change dynamically in response to plot developments, adding an extra layer of engagement and immersiveness.
