Description
Published by Interplay Productions, J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, Vol. I is a beloved retro game for Super Nintendo. Beginning as Frodo Baggins, players progressively gather the remaining members of the Fellowship; Samwise Gamgee, Peregrin Took, Meriadoc Brandybuck, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and Gandalf. The game impressively supports more than four players with the addition of the SNES Multitap and extra controllers. The storyline unfolds through a series of fetch quests, requiring players to explore expansive environments for relevant items. Locations from the book are beautifully captured in the game, including the Shire, the village of Bree, the elven city of Rivendell, and the Mines of Moria. Despite the game’s finale differing from the book, the fight between the Fellowship and the Balrog in the Mines of Moria offers a thrilling climax. The Lord of the Rings: Volume II was planned to follow, but due to poor sales, it never saw the light on the SNES platform.
