This game is a westernized conversion of the Japanese arcade game Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun, the inaugural game in the Kunio-kun series which includes Super Dodge Ball and River City Ransom. Renegade stands as an immediate technological predecessor to Double Dragon. This game first introduced several key features of the beat 'em up genre, including 4-directional control and punch-jump-kick play action. In Renegade, players control a vigilante, known as Mr. K in the NES version, who battles various street gangs in his quest to rescue his girlfriend. The game's playing field is limited to one two-screen-wide area and does not scroll continuously.
